Not just food!

Abbey’s Community Cafe is a place to pick up an affordable, delicious lunch – but it’s also so much more than that. We aim to provide a warm, welcoming community hub every Saturday, where people of all ages and backgrounds can come and hang out, meet new people, enjoy performances and take part in activities.

‘Abbey Saturdays’ therefore have the following on offer for visitors…

Tech Buddies 10am – 12pm

Over 60? Need support with your laptop, phone or tablet? Our free Tech Buddies sessions take place in the Main Hall every Saturday morning. A trained volunteer will help you with whatever you need – whether that’s setting up an email account or getting to grips with online shopping. You’ll have lots of laughs along the way and the group usually stay for a meal after the session. If you’d like to know more about the sessions or fancy volunteering, contact Gavin for more info on 07505 933617.

‘I have learnt a lot since I joined the IT class and continue to grow in confidence… I find it very motivating, the staff are friendly, helpful, understanding and make everyone feel welcome every time… I look forward to attending every week.’

Arts’n’Crafts 11am – 1pm £1 by donation

Drop by Abbey’s Main Hall on a Saturday morning and you’ll find locals of all ages relaxing and getting creative with paints and crafts! Every session is inspired in a different theme. Community members exchange and explore ideas together and meet new friends. It’s definitely not just for kids! We have an emphasis on using recycled materials and most of our resources come from the Hackney SCRAP project.

‘I come here with my children every Saturday. They love it and enjoy it very much. We can’t wait to come here and talk about these activities all week. Simone is a special person. She is kind and loving towards everyone. For me, mum of 3, is very pleasant to come here and have a little chat. I can see all other people enjoying themselves. I really like the idea of having open café and other activities at the same time. It puts the community together.’

Saturday trips 2pm every first Saturday of the month

After your cafe lunch, you might decide to take part in one of our sightseeing trips. We go out in all seasons, travelling by public transport to visit amazing free London attractions: museums, parks, markets and events. To find out about the next trip and book your place, contact Simone on 020 7624 8378 or

“I so much enjoyed my day out at Kew Gardens, the tree-top walk, so many glass houses and flower gardens… it was a long day rewarded by the best night’s sleep in a long time.”

Dave’s Shredding Service 11am – 2pm every first Saturday of the month

Every first Saturday of the month, we have a shredder available for centre users to use (for a small donation) at the cafe. A great chance to get rid of those bills and other personal documents that build up but you don’t want to put straight in the bin. Look out for Dave (above). A big thank you to him for coming up with this great idea as it is super important to dispose of important documents safely to avoid identity theft or scamming.

Raffles, bookswaps, boardgames, Restart Parties, performances, music and more…

As well as the regular activities above, we have lots of other things on offer from time to time at the cafe – such as raffles (usually every third Saturday of the month); plant sales; parties with the wonderful Restart Project; books and clothes swaps; stalls from local traders; visits from various groups and musicians and much more. The best way to keep up to date with what’s coming up is to read the latest Up Your Street newsletter here or get in touch with Laura on 07447 932564.
